When I was a little child, I asked myself, ‘why is it that a nun like Indo Menggay is so caring. Does she have a vested interest or does it spring from a natural desire to serve people in need, like our tribe?’ She awakened our tribe through education: how to count, write, stand as a person with dignity and rights, training on leadership and engagement within and outside community and overseas. Her way of consciousness-raising was about self-reliance, not about money. As a child, I gradually realized that her assistance on behalf of the needy is a form of heroism, it was heart-felt, and a sacrifice. In the hearts of the Ayta, you are a hero, Indo Menggay. You are one revered as a true mother, Indo Menggay. Now we see the fruit of your sacrifice. LAKAS has grown and is standing on its own feet. I always remember your words concerning empowerment: ‘A child always held by his parents, will turn out to be a cripple. It is necessary to empower a child, even if he stumbles, he will learn to get up and stand on his own feet.’ Many among the young have completed their studies and have learnt to be independent. The last lesson you taught me, you challenged me whether I can stand on my own feet, sacrifice myself for the welfare of the majority, particularly my tribe. Yes! I have that capacity because you have become my role model from the moment I began my schooling. Sacrifice is not about filling in your pocket with money but how to help those in need in a way that is not tainted with money. ‘Voluntarism, engagement, consciousness-raising, concern for others’ — these are what I have learnt from Indo Menggay. You are a sweet memory for my community. Thank you so much for all your sacrifices, love and care for us. We hope you will continue to guide us in our work. Indo, we will love you always with our hearts and minds, and this will never change. Thank you! Thank you! Goodbye!
