2006 marks the 100th Anniversary of Filipino immigration to
Hawai’i. The theme of this year’s conference
“Sakadas and
Beyond: Connecting our Past to Inspire the
Future” honours Sakadas, the first Filipino
pioneers recruited to work the sugarcane fields in Hawai’i. Dr.
Patricia Espiritu-Halagao, program chair, reports that Call for Paper
topics can include past, present and future experiences of other
Filipinos in Hawai’i and in the continental United States.
