Dear Friends:

PAHRA'S International Human Rights Awards ceremony was held tonight.

It was a good occasion to give that much overdue recognition to all of you, our dear friends from the international solidarity movement, who have stood by us and with us, through all these years.

Ten groups and individuals were given plaques this evening. It does not mean, however, that the others who were not called tonight contributed less to the cause of human rights. In fact, all the nominees will be given human rights certificates as a gesture of our deep appreciation for your unwavering commitment to the cause of human rights in the Philippines. This is the least we could do.

Tonight’s ten awardees were:

FGN, Netherlands — received by Mang Bert of FGN;
Evert de Boer, Netherlands — received by Mang Bert of FGN;
KSP–PSSC, Netherlands — received by Vim Santos of PGX and Byron Bocar for KSP;
Ruth Harris, USA — received by Rene Nachura;
Church Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (CCHRP), USA (posthumous) — received by Max de Mesa of TFDP;
Friends of the Filipino People (FFP), USA — received by Charito Planas, who made special mention of the contribution of Daniel Boone Schirmer to the cause of peace and human rights in the Philippines;
Bishop Aloisius Nobuo Soma, Japan — received by Roberto Soares of CNRT–East Timor;
Philippinenbuero, Germany — received by Niklaus Reese of Asia House–Philippinenbuero;
Brida Brennan, Netherlands — received by Sr. Mary Radcliff of TFDP;
Anke Reese, Germany (posthumous) — received by her son, Niklaus Reese.
